Frequently Asked Questions

Who should consider going to counseling?

Anyone who has worry or stress at all could benefit from counseling. We all have times where we need to talk through our lives with an objective third party who can listen without judgment. There is no problem too big or small for counseling.

What is an intake session?

The first counseling session, or the intake, is designed for me to get to know you and understand what has brought you to counseling. The session lasts about 80 minutes and will involve me asking questions to learn about your background, family history, mental health history, and presenting problems.

What does a “normal” counseling session look like?

There is no such thing as a “normal” session since ever session is uniquely tailored to you, the client. Every session will last about 50 minutes and can cover whatever topic you are wanting to talk about that day. As the counselor, I will follow you to make the session fit your needs and wants, whatever that looks like.

how does teletherapy differ from in person sessions?

Teletherapy is a mode of therapy done online using a secure website to teleconference. During teletherapy, you and I will both log onto a secure website at the time of our scheduled appointment and have our counseling session “face to face” via the internet. Especially during COVID-19, teletherapy is a safe and convenient form of counseling.

Is everything i tell my counselor confidential?

When you come to counseling, one of the first things we will do is go over your rights to confidentiality. Everything you tell your counselor is confidential and she is not allowed to rely the information to anyone else with a few exceptions that your counselor will clearly go over with you at the time of the appointment. If you are under the age of 18, you will also need your parents permission to attend counseling.

How often and for how long do people normally attend counseling sessions?

How often you come to therapy is completely up to you. Some clients have a standing appointment once a week, once every other week, or once a month while other clients only come in as often as they feel is needed. Some clients feel they only need a few sessions to meet their goals while others utilize therapy as a lifelong helping tool. Frequency of sessions is tailored to you the client and can change throughout your life depending on your circumstances.
